BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina Foundation and Stephen Sills, Professor of Sociology and Director at the UNC Greensboro Center for Housing and Community Studies, released a report in March on the state of Affordable and Healthy Homes in North Carolina. Among the policy recommendations laid out in the report are improving aging housing stock and encouraging housing equity through ownership.
Unsafe homes with faulty structural conditions or hazardous materials present serious potential health and safety issues – from leaks, inadequate ventilation, and faulty exhaust systems that can increase asthma morbidity, to lead paint and water pipes, to asbestos and carbon monoxide leaks.
The report's findings reaffirm Rebuilding Together’s core values in preserving affordable homeownership and improving the safety and health of homes and neighborhoods. Read through the full report to learn more about what we can do to improve health outcomes through housing.
